William Clegg Kelley

William Clegg Kelley, known affectionately as Pops, passed away on September 5, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born on June 18, 1950, to WL and Mae Kelley of Sterrett, Alabama, he was a proud 1968 graduate of Vincent High School and then became a devoted husband to Jill Kelley, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage. He was also a loving father to Nicole (Daniel) Errickson and Eric (Chandler) Kelley. His heart was further enriched by his six grandchildren: Lila Kelley, Amelia Kelley, Joey Errickson, Chelsea Errickson, Lydia Kelley, and Luke Errickson. Clegg dedicated his life to bringing joy and humor to those around him, including his numerous friends and family members.

Clegg worked for the Birmingham News for 30 years, where he was known for his cheerful demeanor and sense of humor. Growing up playing football and being an avid fan of both Mississippi State and Alabama football, he enjoyed the thrill of the game and the camaraderie it brought. In his earlier years, he took pleasure in hunting and fishing with his dad, uncles, cousins and friends, but as time passed, his focus shifted to his family. His unwavering support and dedication to his loved ones were hallmarks of his character.

He spent the last nine years of his life under the compassionate care of the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care- Cahaba Valley, whose kindness he deeply appreciated. Clegg’s life was marked by his willingness to always help, his ability to make others smile with a joke or a story, and his commitment to his family. He will be remembered for the love he brought into the lives of everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will take place at First Baptist Church Pelham on Tuesday, September 10th with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. with the service at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alabama Kidney Foundation (www.alkidney.org) or American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org) in memory of Clegg Kelley.
