Franklin Joseph Thompson

Franklin Joseph Thompson, affectionately known as “Frank” or “Pop,” passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, at the age of 71.
Frank was born on December 23, 1954, at Fort Knox, Kentucky. As the son of a military family, his childhood was anything but ordinary. His father, Colonel John Wesley Thompson, served in the United States Army, taking the family around the world, including several years in Indonesia, before they eventually made Alabama home. Although his family’s roots ran deep in Eufaula, Birmingham became the place where Frank built a life and raised the family he loved.
Growing up in a military family gave Frank a deep appreciation for those who served our country. He held members of the United States Armed Forces in high regard and never lost his respect for the sacrifices made by military families. His love for America remained an important part of who he was throughout his life.
On February 9, 1978, Frank married Patricia Nealle (Harper) Thompson, beginning a marriage that would span 48 years. Together they built a home, raised seven children, and shared a lifetime of memories.
Their family continued to grow beyond anything they could have imagined. Frank was blessed with 25 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, each adding another branch to the family tree that remains his greatest legacy.
In the later years of Frank’s life, Patricia lovingly cared for him with extraordinary patience, compassion, and unwavering devotion as he battled dementia. Through every difficult season, she faithfully remained by his side, honoring the vows they made nearly five decades earlier. Her quiet strength and sacrificial love were a beautiful reflection of her commitment to him, and their family will forever be grateful for the care she gave.
Frank found joy in the outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or simply spending time outside, he appreciated the peace and beauty of God’s creation. He had a sharp mind, a memorable sense of humor, and a natural curiosity about life, history, science, and the world around him. Frank was also a dreamer who enjoyed imagining new possibilities and sharing those ideas with the people around him. He was a devoted Auburn football fan, and every fall Saturday was an opportunity to cheer on the Tigers. He never missed the chance to greet a fellow Auburn fan with a heartfelt “War Eagle!” It became one of the many little things that made him unmistakably Frank.
No life can truly be captured in just a few paragraphs. A lifetime is made up of countless moments, relationships, joys, struggles, and memories. Today, we remember Frank—known to so many simply as “Pop”—as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, outdoorsman, proud American, and loyal Auburn fan. Most of all, we remember him as a man whose life became forever woven into the lives of those who loved him.
Frank’s Christian faith was more than an important part of his life; it was the foundation of who he was. He was a longtime member of Canaan Baptist Church on Morgan Road, where he found fellowship, encouragement, and community. He enjoyed spending time with his small group, attending Sunday school, sharing meals, and gathering with friends from the church. His family finds comfort in the promises of Scripture, the grace of God, and the hope found in Jesus Christ. Though they grieve his absence, they do so with gratitude for the years they shared and with hope that he is now whole, at peace, and in the presence of the Lord.
Frank was preceded in death by his father, Colonel John Wesley Thompson; his mother, Margaret Jewell Thompson Brown; and his stepfather, Major Lee Brown.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Patricia Nealle (Harper) Thompson; his children, Natalie Faith Thompson; Wesley Franklin Thompson; Aimee Camille Davis and her husband, Bobby Davis; Tyler Neal Thompson and his wife, Megan Thompson; Colleen Olivia Tyler and her husband, Jason Tyler; Brianna Joy Thompson; and Dillon Joseph Thompson and his wife, Erin Thompson; 25 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Captain Robert Lee Thompson, John Thompson, and Mark Thompson; his stepmother, Dao Thompson; and many extended family members and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life honoring Frank will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Church of the Highlands – Riverchase Campus in Birmingham, Alabama. Family and friends are warmly invited to join us as we remember, celebrate, and give thanks for his life.
Rest easy, Pop. War Eagle.
I would like to thank the Lord for knowing Frank through our son’s marriage to his daughter Colleen. I have always enjoyed the times we’ve spent together at our grandkids birthdays, going to dinner, or just sitting and having a heart to heart talk about life, especially relating to Jesus. I will definitely miss Frank, someone I considered a friend. I pray for the comfort and peace of Christ to cover Pat and all of the Thompson family.
