Bobby Edward Nix

Bobby Edward Nix left this life on September 27th, 2024, with his daughter by his side. He will be greatly missed. Bobby leaves our hearts full of only wonderful memories. He was born on February 10th, 1933, in Franklin County, Alabama. Bobby grew up there and worked the family farm in Red Bay, Alabama which he has kept-all these years. He was voted wittiest in his senior class and has lived up to that title the rest of his life. Shortly after graduating high school, he was drafted into the US Army. He missed deployment to Korea by one day as the war ended.
Bobby’s work ethic was second to none, he worked for the railroad before finding a forever career with insurance. In 1959 he met a cute little lady named Doris Holland. After a long courtship of 3 months, in her words “he just had to have me”. They were married 1 month short of 54 years as she was called to heaven first. They enjoyed traveling together to visit 48 of the 50 states. Bobby retired at age 60 from Allstate Insurance company. In his 29 years of service, he only took 1 sick day.
His hobbies included, playing the fiddle, collecting and repairing lawnmowers, even if they didn’t need it. Bobby was an avid gardener, he loved bicycles, repairing them and riding them. He has been part of the “Still Kickin’ Pickers” a local music group that meets weekly up until July of this year.
He attended Metropolitan Church of God until his wife passed away and then attended Chelsea Church of God in his hometown. Bobby was an active member in Love in Action, a ministry that provided food and goods to low-income families.
He was papaw extraordinaire to his grandchildren. He taught all 3 of them how to ride their bikes. Bobby made a very intentional effort to be part of their daily lives, even as his body became feeble. He kept a childlike spirit, participating in family games and doing whatever he could to bring smiles to their faces. In spite of the fact that, he was legally blind, he never allowed that to stand in his way of being uplifting and encouraging to others.

Bobby was preceded by his parents, John Dexter and Mamie Cole Nix; loving wife, Doris Holland Nix. His surviving relatives are his daughter, Melissa Nix Garner (Craig); granddaughter, Holland Katherine Relfe (Andrew); grandsons, Jennings Lee and Joseph Cole Rickard; great-grandsons; Wellington Cash, and William Bennett Relfe; great-granddaughter, Mary Holland Relfe.

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the Metropolitan Church of God (2800 Metropolitan Way Birmingham, AL 35243), starting at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service. Burial will follow in the Valhalla Cemetery (839 Wilkes Rd. Birmingham, AL 35228.)  All flowers welcomed or in lieu of flowers, please donate to the KidMin c/o Kellie Morrison in Bobby’s honor.

My husband Norm and I were privileged to call Bob our dear friend for well over 50 years. I was honored to be maid-of-honor in their wedding, as his wife Doris was a precious friend with whom I had a special bond. Our hearts are saddened by his passing, but we rejoice that he is with his Savior and his precious Doris. Melissa Lynn and her family are family to us. We love them and pray for peace and comfort for them.

Our condolences and prayers. He was Uncle Bob to me, and I have fond memories of him from my childhood with my family. He was shy and always kind and I could see how much he loved Aunt Doris and Lynn, and then later the grand and great grands, what a full life he had. We will miss him, but know that he is with the Lord and his beloved Doris! Even thought we live a vast ocean away, our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with all of you today…family and friends.
