John Alan Maddox

John Alan Maddox, age 72 of Birmingham, AL, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at UAB Palliative & Comfort Care, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

John was born on August 1, 1953, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and grew up in Jasper. He was the youngest son of the late Robert “Dan” Maddox and the late Julia Maddox.

He began his lifelong career with Coca‑Cola Bottling Company UNITED on his 16th birthday, August 1, 1969, where he started by sorting returnable bottles and sweeping floors. His strong work ethic and dedication set the foundation for a remarkable career spanning 49 years.

John moved to Birmingham in 1974, where he worked in the Classic Foods money room while attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham at night, earning his accounting degree in 1981. He continued to advance within Coca‑Cola UNITED, becoming Corporate Controller in 1993 and passing the CPA exam. In 2001, he relocated to Chattanooga to join UNITED Packers, where he played a key role in growing the company’s HotFill business before returning to Birmingham in 2005, where he remained until his retirement in 2018.

Along with his corporate career, John was passionate about developing others and served as an instructor for Dale Carnegie Training during the 1990s.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Ordway. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Connie Maddox; his daughter, Adrienne Haynes (Josh); his beloved granddaughter, Eliana Haynes, whom he proudly cherished as “Papa John”; and his brother, Ken Maddox (Brenda).

In his younger years, John enjoyed playing golf and racquetball. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the early 2000s, he remained determined and devoted himself to regular exercise.

Above all, John will be remembered for his kindness, his infectious sense of humor, and his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He was a longtime member and Deacon Emeritus of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he was actively involved in the life of the church and the Forerunners group.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church on Wednesday,

July 8, 2026, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the service at 11:00 a.m.

Flowers are welcome, and those who wish to honor John’s memory through a memorial gift may make contributions to the Parkinson Association of Alabama.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23 ESV
