Sherry Grissom Mitchell

She was born on a Friday, October 24, 1947. She spent all of her years active and doing all the things she loved. We thought we’d have her many more years, but she left us on Monday, March 31, 2025.

77 wonderful years and almost 60 years the bride of Larry Mitchell. The two of them celebrated everyday by adopting the saying, “I love you today.”  Love is a choice, not a feeling, and everyday they chose to love and honor the other. Sharing a family, business, and their hobbies, everyday was an adventure and a chance to spread their love to others. In Mom’s retired life, her and my Dad enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson trike. They have always enjoyed a motorcycle ride, but once Dad had his work related accident, the trike was a safer alternative for them together. The open air and familiar roads was where they found relaxation and comfort. They belong to their beloved “HOG” club that shared their same love of the road and people. They would celebrate, eat and ride together weekly. Those people became their family. When they weren’t riding, Mom enjoyed line dancing at the local senior centers. She would spend three days a week driving from Alabaster, Pelham and Columbiana to dance and see her other core group of people. Mom and Dad also were blessed with life long friends from their newlywed Sunday School class, which has done life together ever since. What an amazing group of people. Mom was never one to sit still much. She has always been an avid supporter of her children, grandchildren and others she considered hers in whatever they were participating in; sports, dance, theatre or simply life. She has touched so many people over the years. They reminded us how Mother just loved out in the open. She never hid the way she felt about people. She made them feel loved, comforted, seen and heard. She made us all feel so special and important. I am so grateful that so many people have reminded me of her kind of love. Being so close to it almost allows you to miss it. In her spare time Mom also enjoyed cleaning and caring for their beautiful home and their current fur baby. Mom has always had such a soft spot for dogs. It was just another child to her. Mallie her sweet girl was by her side too. Unfortunately, Mom developed AFIB and chronic anemia a few years back which would cause her to need iron infusions. This particular weak spell she developed double pneumonia and had other complications she was not able to overcome. She was strong and brave and ready to meet her Savior face to face.

She leaves her beloved husband and childhood sweetheart, Larry Mitchell.  Her son, Chel Mitchell; her daughter, Candacey Mitchell Brown; son-in-love, Mark Brown; grandson Nix Brown and granddaughters Abbie Brown, Emma Brown and Alyssa Nettles. Sherry had many other sons, daughters and children that called her Mom or Grammy as well.

Mom wanted a Celebration of Life not a funeral. So we have planned an event that would meet her expectations. It will be where our family can be surrounded by all those that loved her so deeply. I am so grateful we can be comforted in the arms of the Lord because we all are certainly mourning the loss of our Sherry Mitchell.  We will see you again one day and we will celebrate you everyday until then.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. -Matthew 5:4
