Robert Christopher Godfrey

Robert Christopher (Chris) Godfrey, age 57, of Clanton, met his Jesus on Wednesday May 14, 2025, at 12:07am at St. Vincent’s Clanton with his family by his side. Chris was born in Birmingham, Alabama at South Highlands Hospital. His birth was a miracle birth, and the rest of his life was lived out as a miracle. If you have known Chris since childhood, then you can testify that he was a walking miracle. He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 4 but never let it stop him from doing anything he wanted to do. He received a pancreas transplant and lived for years without his dreaded shots and glucose checks. When his transplanted pancreas started failing the dreaded shots and glucose checks were a part of his life again. Chris would tell anyone he met to be an organ donor and help others with the gift of life. He felt like his years without diabetes were his golden years. Chris never let diabetes defeat him, and as shocked as we all were, diabetes did not cause his death.

Chris was compassionate and would give to anyone in need. He would stop his car, in the middle of the road, to give someone a ride or rescue an animal. We know that Chris loved Jesus and he shared about his Jesus on mission trips, youth trips and with anyone that he met. Some of his favorite words were, “I know where I am going, and I don’t fear death.”

Chris loved his friends deeply and there were so many of them that we could never list them all. Christ loved being the life of the party and you never knew what he might say. There are enough “Chris Godfrey” stories around to write several books. He had no fear in him and his nieces and nephews could talk him into doing anything. It might be jumping off a house into a swimming pool, riding off a pier on a bicycle and the list goes on. Chris did whatever it took to get a laugh out of you, and smiling was his favorite pastime.

He lived life to the fullest and would do anything that you ask him to do. He loved aggravating Alabama fans and liberals, Auburn football, selling anything that he could get his hands on, children, family, camping but most of all he loved his Jesus. He loved “Field of Angels” and worked hard on trying to get one started in Clanton. It was his heart and passion. He loved the ministry of Sav-a-life and the protection of the unborn.

He was preceded in death by his father Bobby Godfrey, sister Anna Marie Godfrey, Grandparents Rev. & Mrs. H.L. Sizemore, Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Godfrey and Marie Drees.

He is survived by his wife Beth Wise Godfrey, stepson John Owens (fiancée- Taylor); mother Jean Godfrey; older sisters Robin Acre and Beth Winterbottom (Ricky); nieces Anna Cannon (Rev. Stephen), Lauren Warren (Brandon), Paul Winterbottom (Jenny), Brad Acre (Rebecca), Adam Winterbottom (Chelsie), Maddy Hodge (Brian); 11 great nieces and nephews, many cousins, aunts, uncles and too many friends to count.

Chris memorial service will be Saturday May 17, 2025, at 4pm with visitation at 3pm at Christian Life Fellowship in Calera, Alabama. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Chris memory to Field of Angels or Sav-a-life. Both of these ministries were dear to his heart. Please share condolence online for the family, they would love to hear more “Chris stories”.

Go rest at the feet of Jesus, Chris, your work on earth is complete. It isn’t goodbye but see you soon!

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8

What a beautiful tribute to his life. I cannot remember a time when I did not know Chris. He was always happy to lend me a hand when we worked together at Walmart in Alabaster! He went through so much in his life but never let that keep him down. My prayers with him and the entire Godfrey family.

I just found out about Chris and am heartbroken. We worked together at Marvin’s when it was located in Pelham. Chris kept us all laughing with his pranks and jokes. Chris fought a long hard fight but never let it get him down. We know where he is and will see him soon in a glorious place called Heaven.

Even though I meet Chris through my daughter Jenny joining the winterbottom family, I will say every time I was around him he was the most kind and loving person to me and my family. I will always remember him for that kindness.
He made me feel like he had known me for years and he was always smiling. I didn’t have to wonder if he knew Jesus you just felt the love of Jesus when you were around him even if it was just for a few minutes.
I can only hope my light can shine as bright as his and people with know I love Jesus without saying a word like you could feel with him. He will be forever missed but we will see him again. Just know we are praying for the whole family and we sending so much love to you all ♥️
