Monty Douglas Thurmond

Monty Douglas Thurmond, age 81, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Helena, Alabama, with his family by his side.

Born on December 30, 1944, in Staten Island, New York, Monty lived a life marked by courage, service, laughter, and deep love for family and friends. He was a proud graduate of Gadsden High School in Gadsden, Alabama, and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army as a combat veteran of the Vietnam War with CO B 2/8/4 INF Division.

Monty’s military service was characterized by great bravery and sacrifice. He proudly received numerous honors, including the Purple Heart (1OLC), Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star with Valor Device, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He carried the pride of his service throughout his life and enjoyed sharing his Army stories with friends and family, always honoring the memories of those he served alongside.

Outside of his military service, Monty lived life with passion and adventure. He loved boating, sailing, fishing, fast cars, and was an avid marksman. Few places brought him more joy than the Florida Keys, where he found peace and happiness. He was known for his big smile, striking blue eyes, and a one-of-a-kind sense of humor that could light up any room. His laughter, storytelling, and unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Above all, Monty valued the time he spent with his family and friends. He was a loyal friend, a caring family man, and someone whose presence brought warmth, strength, and laughter to those around him.

A service to honor and celebrate Monty’s life will be held at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Alabama National Cemetery. (3133 Highway 119 Montevallo, Alabama 35115)
