Carolyn Douglas Fulmer

Carolyn Douglas Fulmer was reunited in glory with her beloved husband, Wayne, on June 14, 2026. She was born in Walker, LA on March 19, 1936, to Rev. Luman Douglas and Eleanor Kiker Douglas.
She met the love of her life, Wayne “Sonny” Fulmer in Homer, LA when she was 14 and he was 16. They were together 75 years, dating for 6 and married for another 69, until Wayne’s death in November of 2025. Wayne, her daughters, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren were her greatest joy.
She was a graduate of Homer High School and attended Louisiana Tech where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She worked for several years as an Industrial Psychologist Assistant, translating test scores into narratives of a job applicant’s skills, interests, and work styles.
She loved to travel with Wayne. When their daughters were young, they would go tent camping all over the Southern US. In their 60’s they bought a motor home and a Honda Goldwing Motorcycle to pull behind it. Her favorite place to go was the Smoky Mountains, either just the two of them or with any kids and grandkids who were free at the time. She loved square dancing and she and Wayne traveled with their square dance group. Because they would talk to everyone they ran across, they were always finding people with whom they connected, either through a church, an extended family member, or work.
Her many other hobbies included sewing, crocheting, and genealogy.
Carolyn was an accomplished musician, her main gift being as a pianist. She shared her gift with her church families throughout her life. She also played pianos and organs around the world whenever she got the chance, one of the highlights being playing Big Bertha, the organ at the Alabama Theater, earlier this year.
She was active in her church, Morningstar Methodist, in Chelsea, Alabama, as well as many other churches during her life. She and Wayne served as youth mentors when their oldest girls were teens at Jefferson United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, LA, including two youth choir trips riding in an unairconditioned school bus and sleeping on church gym floors. The choir members, known as the 13th Disciples, were very attached to Carolyn and Wayne and they became Mama Fulmer and Papa Fulmer. Some of those teenagers remained lifelong friends. She continued sharing her musical gifts even through her last days, as she served as pianist for her Bible Study at Somerby Senior Living.
She is survived by three daughters, Marty Ducote and her husband Joseph, Connie Lumley and her husband Tim, and Vicky McKay; her grandchildren Michael Lumley and his wife Jennifer Tarr, Robert Lumley and his wife Lauren, Elizabeth Ducote, Rachel McKay, James McKay, and Jameson Hughes and his wife Nancy; and great grandchildren, Sawyer Statler Lumley, and Caroline Mena Tarr Lumley, Margot Hughes and Lillian Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a beloved son-in-law, Mike McKay.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on July 10, 2026 at Morningstar Methodist Church, 11072 Co Rd 11, Chelsea, AL 35043. Visitation will begin at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, Carolyn wished for donations to be made to Morningstar Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
