William Thomas “Tommy” Smith

William Thomas “Tommy” Smith, age 72, passed away in the comfort of his home unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with his sisters, Karen and Mary Ann at his side. He was born on the 27th of March 1954, to David Curtis Smith and Dorothy Dean Lawley Smith, both have preceded him. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary G. Smith; the dad who raised him, Clifton L. Smith Sr.; two brothers, David C. Smith and Clifton L. Smith Jr.; sister, Judy Carr; aunts, Mary E. (Charles E.) Bowlin, Carolyn Delarosa, and Hazel L. Ray; uncles, John B. (Eva), Charles E. (Vernice), Hubert (Mildred) Lawley, James L. (Frances) Lawley, Raymond (Nina Jean) Wooten, James C. (Carol) Smith; and one great niece, Sharon Leighann Smith.
Some friends and family may know him as Preacher. He use to tell his Uncle James (Papa Duke) that he was Reverend Smith, so his uncle started the name Preacher, even though he wasn’t.
In his younger years he was a volunteer firefighter for Alabaster, while working for Pure Pack Ice in Pelham for many years. He also worked for the Hannah Home Store in Alabaster as a driver. When he met his late wife Mary, he stayed home to take care of her and travel.
He is survived by his sisters, Karen Martin (Chris Berryhill), Mary Ann Barker, Tammy (George) Vanderslice; brother, James L. Smith Sr.; nieces, Brenda (Rodney) Thomas, Belinda Bradley (Carol Vance), Linda (Daniel) Lucas, and Krystal Cassadine; nephews, Trentin Martin, Terry (Beverly) Carr, James L. Smith Jr., Michael Smith, Marty Smith, Andy Dunaway, George-Ryan Vanderslice, and JT Vanderslice; great nieces, Sabra (Amber) Parker, Crystal (Walter) Jacobs, Victoria Marczewski, Keri-Anne Carr, Kendyl Carr, Faith Bradley, Haley Williams, and Danielle (Jacob) Reasoner; great nephews, David Sims II, Michael J. Sims, and John Terrell Carr; great great nieces: Ryver Sims, Ashanti Carter, Xena Stojak, Elizabeth Carr, Caroline Carr, Lydia Carr, and Kenai Reasoner; great great nephews: Sawyer Sims, Truette Sims, Maddox Sims, Samuel Bradley, Robin Jacobs, and TJ Stojak.
Services will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Charter Funeral Home. A visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. followed by a service starting at 12:00 p.m. Tommy will be laid to rest in Ryan Crossing Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
