Gilbert “Gil” William Carpenter

February 28, 1948 – August 24, 2024

Gilbert (Gil) William Carpenter, a man who faced life with unwavering courage and a smile, passed away peacefully at home on August 24, 2024, after a brave 12-year battle with cancer. His love for his family was evident in every moment he lived.

Born on February 28, 1948, Gil graduated from B.U.S. (now Altamont) in 1966. He then attended Sewanee before graduating from Samford University in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration. Gil spent many successful years in the wholesale flooring industry in Dothan, Alabama, before moving back to Birmingham in 2000 to be closer to his beloved family and friends.

Gil is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathy Spader Carpenter, and their four beautiful daughters: Kelly (Ezell) Webb, Ashley (Tom) Bazemore, Tracy (Clay) Colley, all of Birmingham, and Courtney (John) Andre of Dothan, Alabama. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, who were the light of his life: Ezell Jr. and Walker Webb, Thomas IV and Mills Bazemore, Vance and Anna Clayton Colley, and Martin and Taylor Andre.

Gil is also lovingly remembered by his brother, Harry (Barbara) Carpenter of Fairhope, AL, and his sister, Carolyn Henderson of Dothan, AL, who were always an important and cherished part of his life. He was predeceased by his parents, Gilbert Milton Carpenter and Carolyn Horner Carpenter.

Known for his many talents and hobbies, Gil’s true passion was golf, especially when he was able to “take” money from his golfing buddies at Bent Brook. He also enjoyed playing the casinos and spending weekends on his boat at Lay Lake, also known as “Gilmos,” his happy place.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Trinity United Methodist Church.
