Glenn M. Swicegood, Jr.

1944-2023

Glenn Swicegood, 79, passed away after a three year battle with cancer on August 6, 2023 in Birmingham, AL with his daughter, Kiley Watson, her husband, Tom, and his grandchildren, Gracie and Emily surrounding him with love.

For the past 3 years, Glenn has been a resident of Fairhope, AL where he could fish to his heart’s content on Mobile Bay and surrounding waters. Prior to that he lived in Fairfield, NC for 16 years where he hunted and fished on Lake Mattamuskeet, and in the Pamlico Sound and surrounding waterways. Fishing was the true love of his life.

Glenn was born in Kinston, NC to Glenn Sr. and Myrtle Shepherd Swicegood. He has a sister Nancy Swicegood Reid (William) of Pinehurst, and nieces, Allison Reid (Kelly Fernald) of Portland, ME and Tracy Reid Carroll (Win) of Atlanta. A son, Kip Jason Swicegood, predeceased him at the age 4.

The Swicegood family moved from Kinston to Wilson, NC in 1946, then to Raleigh in 1956, and to Tarboro in 1962.

Glenn graduated from Needham Broughton HS in Raleigh and Barton College in Wilson. He served in the Coast Guard for 2 years and then moved to Jacksonville, FL where he worked for RingPower Caterpillar Corp. before moving to Ft. Smith, MT in 1997 where he fished and guided on the Bighorn River. He moved to Hyde County, NC in 2007.

In addition to his passion for fishing and hunting, Glenn loved travelling, woodworking and cooking. He will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, impressive memory, storytelling, and his generous and helpful spirit. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. As per Glenn’s wishes, there will be no funeral arrangements but instead, intimate ash casting ceremonies will be celebrated by his close friends and family on the waters of the Pamlico Sound in NC and the Intracoastal in Palm Valley, FL in the near future. The best way to honor Glenn’s memory is to make a donation to the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina at https://ccanc.org/product/donatecca-nc/ in his name under “special instructions.”
