Glaudine Owens Belcher
Sarah Glaudine Owens was born March 26, 1934, to John Henry Wesley Floyd Owens and Pearlie Odell Elam. She attended Bibb County High School and six months after graduating high school, she married her sweetheart, Bruce Belcher. They moved to Birmingham immediately where she attended Alverson Draughon Business College and learned typing and shorthand. These skills allowed her to gain employment with the state of Alabama Department of Education in Montgomery after Bruce joined the Air Force. She worked for the Department of Defense for several years before Bill was born in 1959. Air Force life involved multiple relocations including Alaska, Louisiana, Kansas, Texas, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Georgia. A move could be as short as one year or as long as three years. While Bruce was in Vietnam, she took care of three children in Brent, AL with the help of family and friends.
In 1974, after Bruce’s retirement, they moved back home to Brent, built a house and settled down. She went to work for the state of Alabama Department of Human Resources and retired with 20 years of service. She enjoyed working in her yard, growing and putting up vegetables in the summer. She enjoyed hosting her extended family during the holidays. She believed strongly in her church and used Sunday mornings to prepare her lesson, cut out Bible flannel graph story characters or prepare social events for her students. Bruce and Glaudine hauled Carmen all over Centreville, picking up children (or adults) for church. During revival meetings she made sure the family went every night. She served as church treasure for many years and felt blessed to have had the opportunity to attend an accounting class at University of Montevallo to prepare for this task. She believed strongly that giving a portion of one’s income to God was a key to financial success. She made Carmen promise that if she was ever unable to manage her finances alone, she would make sure her monthly church contribution was made.
Her final home on this earth was in the Bibb County nursing home. She never saw the nursing home as “home” but never complained about her care there. The BMC nursing home staff cared for her almost two years. She was able to come off of hospice care because of the staff and the professional care they provided.
She continued to recognize people and in the morning was always cheerful and happy when family visited. She kept her affairs in order and provided not only for her own nursing home care debt free, but her careful accounting made sure that all of her business affairs were easy to manage.
Throughout life, she frequently did without things she would have liked to make sure her family was well taken care of. We are so grateful for the consistent unselfishness she demonstrated. After several years of declining health and struggles with dementia, Sarah Glaudine Belcher, on July 4th, 2026, realized her true and lasting independence, peacefully slipping the bonds of earth to join her Savior in a land that knows no sunsets, no pain…only pure joy without end. Thank you for all you did for your family and for others during this life. In just a short while we will meet again; what a day that will be!
Glaudine is survived by her son, William “Bill” Belcher II, daughter, Carmen Uber (Gary), grandchildren, Christen Boyd (Chris), Brett Belcher (Lauren), Lauren Uber DeLuca (Justin), Morgan Uber, great-grandchildren Brody and Riley Belcher, Chailynn Boyd, and Adriana DeLuca. Her sister, Carolyn Williams. Her sister-in-law, Betty Belcher and a host of nieces and nephews.
Glaudine will be laid to rest in Friendship Cemetery on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, with a graveside service beginning at 10 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Charter Funeral Home
