William “Buddy” Lacy King

William “Buddy” Lacy King, age 74, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.  He is preceded in death by his parents Lacy Julian King and Helen Mae King, and brothers-in-law Tommy Culp, Col Charles W Simpson Jr., and Gordon Painter.

Buddy is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Simpson King; his children Kayla Franklin (Chris Franklin) and Casey King; and his beloved grandchildren Weller Franklin and Calloway Franklin.  He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl King Culp, and his nieces Cherie Cooper, Dawn Messer and, Brynn Messer; brothers and sisters in law David and Libby Simpson, Darrell and Susan Simpson, Reggie and Kay DuBose and numerous nieces and nephews.

Buddy was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Shortly after, his family moved to Montgomery, where Buddy grew up and graduated from Robert E Lee High School in 1970. After high school, Buddy moved to Colorado, where he embraced his lifelong love of the outdoors while working for Wicks Lumber Company.  During that time, he also pursued another passion: music. Buddy became a licensed sound engineer and enjoyed working in the music industry on the side. During a trip home to visit his parents, Buddy met the love of his life, Laura.  Soon after, he chose a new path, leaving Colorado behind to build a life and family with her. Buddy and Laura were married in August 1987 and soon made their home in Birmingham, where Buddy began his career in surveying.

Of all the roles Buddy held throughout his life, being a husband, father, and grandfather brought him the greatest joy. He was a family man first and foremost and believed deeply in spending quality time together. Family trips to amusement parks and landmarks across the Southeast created cherished memories that Kayla and Casey still hold close today. Through his love and example, Buddy built a family rooted in loyalty, support, and unconditional love.

Everyone who knew Buddy shared the same sentiment: he was one of the kindest people they had ever met. He had a gentle spirit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a heart full of love for others. Buddy was quick with a hug, never hesitant to say, “I love you,” and possessed a quiet emotional strength that comforted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a Celebration of Life for family and friends May 30, 2026, at the Rolling Hills Conference Center in Calera, Al.  from 2-4 pm. (Rolling Hills Conference Center, 521 Hwy 304, Calera, AL)
