James Russell “Rusty” Efferson

James Russell “Rusty” Efferson, age 88, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2026. Born on October 6, 1937, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Rusty lived a life rooted in faith, family, humor, and sports.

Known to everyone simply as Rusty, he was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was married to the love of his life, Mavis Efferson (sweet lips), and together they built a family grounded in faith and strong values. He was a proud father to James Russell Efferson Jr. (Tajuana), Brandi Efferson, and Jock Efferson (Joy).

Rusty’s greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren: Erin Brooks (Brett), Eric Efferson (Katie), Ethan Efferson (Lindsay), Caleb Dietz, Corey Dietz, Kelsey Efferson, Kyle Efferson, and Karis Efferson. And his many great grandchildren. He cherished time spent with them, particularly Saturday morning breakfasts, which were a treasured tradition filled with lots of laughter and love and cheese grits (a papa special).

A lifelong fan of the LSU Tigers, Rusty proudly cheered them on and was never shy about reminding everyone with his favorite phrase, “Geaux Tigers!” He also enjoyed golfing and any opportunity to spend time with his wife and family.

His legacy is one of devotion, kindness, humor, and steady love for those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is rejoicing in Heaven and hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on January 24 at Redemption Church at K Springs. A visitation with family will be held from 10:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration Service at 11 a.m.

Rusty’s laughter and humor with a touch of sarcasm and all-around good nature is what we hope you all remember and enjoy in your memories

Bless you in heaven Rusty! I will always remember your smile and fun-loving spirit. As a kid, I remember you and my dad, Joe Efferson, playing tricks and rough-housing with each other when we visited. They are special memories that will always be remembered.

My prayers to Mavis and all of the family who helped Rusty through illness and old age. He was blessed to have such a tight-knit, supportive, and loving family. Good job!

Enjoyed our friendship many years ago at Mt. Signal Baptist Church. Most times laughter was a part of our fellowship.
