Samuel Ray Pennington

Samuel Ray Pennington, also known as “Big Sam/Sambo”, from Montevallo passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at UAB Hospital, at the age of 47.
Sam was a devoted fiancé, a loving son, brother, father, and a proud “Biggie”. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and his friends became family through the years. Everyone knew he never met a stranger. With a heart full of love and a laugh that could light up any room, Sam made everyone feel welcomed no matter who you were and always tried to bring a smile to those around him. Sam found pride and joy in his career as a welder, truck driver, and an equipment salesman. But beyond work, he truly lived life to the fullest. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved playing pool, and enjoyed riding side-by-sides with friends and family. Whether he was casting a line, cracking jokes, shooting a game of pool, or just spending time with the people he loved, Sam enjoyed every moment of his life.
He is survived by his father, Rickey Pennington (Connie); his brother, Rickey Dale Pennington (Jodie); his sister, Misty Dawson (Buddy); his beloved fiancé, Katrina Pickett; his children, Samuel Pennington (Annie), Gavin Pennington, and Kaylee Pennington; and his cherished grandchildren, Harper, Stella, and Stetson. He also leaves behind a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and friends, who will miss him dearly. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Sammie Kay; grandparents, Aubia and Nellie Pennington, and Samuel Guy and Mayo Rush; aunts and uncles.
A Celebration of Sam’s Life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Charter Funeral Home from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, with Brother Dennis Smith speaking. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories and honor a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a story in honor of Sam or simply live each day to the fullest like he always did.
