Loyd Mitchell Handley

Loyd Mitchell Handley, age 79, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023. He was born January 20, 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Elda Handley, his son Mitchell Lynn Handley and his daughter, Lisa Handley Martin.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Sue Handley; brothers, Stancil Handley (Elizabeth) and Lindsay Handley (Kathy); sons, Chris Handley (Angie) and Andy Handley; daughter, Rachel Morris (Larry); grandson, Kevin Martin; granddaughters, Stevie Sherman (Austin), Peighton Martin, Shelby Handley, Torie Nix (Ricky), and Lindsey Rinehart; and niece (like a daughter) Brandy Tuech (Jeff), and a host of nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.

After he graduated from Thompson High School in 1961, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. Later, he taught auto mechanics at Bessemer Technical School.

Professionally Mitchell worked for Connor Steel for almost 20 years. He was service manager at two auto dealerships, a partner in Handley and Handley Construction and was a distributor for Murray Cookies. He also owned and ran his own auto repair shop.

Mitchell was a devoted husband for 61 years. He and Sue were loving parents and through the years opened their home to many children in need. During his life, Mitchell enjoyed family time, hunting, working with animals, gardening, and drag racing. As a young man he was an accomplished horseman.

Mitchell was devoted to serving the Lord and enjoyed teaching Bible classes at Walnut Creek Methodist Church.

Services will be held Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Riverchase Church of Christ (1868 Montgomery Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35244). A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with a service to follow at 11 a.m.
