Joseph W. Yates

Joseph W. Yates passed from this world on May 2, 2025, and has planted his feet on higher ground. Everyone who met Joe recognized him as a kind and gentle man with a sweet disposition. His legacy of love, faith, and kindness endures in the hearts of all who knew him.

Joe Yates was born in Sontag, Mississippi, on March 3, 1951. He grew up in a loving, God-fearing home, which set him firmly on the path of being a devoted man and believer in Jesus Christ. Joe attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. After completing his education, Joe entered the financial industry and retired in 2016 from BBVA Bank as Senior Vice President of Loans.

Joe was a steadfast and dedicated servant to his community throughout his professional career. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Southside Baptist Church, where he played the piano during Sunday Services for 30 years. Joe loved golf, fishing, and music, especially the piano. He shared his passion for music with his son Robbie, and the two could often be heard playing together whenever the family gathered.

Joe’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to others. He was a devoted husband to Janice for over 50 years, a loving father to Robbie, an extremely proud grandfather to Jackson and Cooper, and a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Joe is survived by his wife, Janice Yates (Sikes), son Robert W. Yates (Bridget), grandsons Jackson Yates and Cooper Yates, and brother Charles Yates (Patricia). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph W. and Thelma Yates, his brother Willie Ray Yates, and his sister Vuanita McPhail (Yates).

Memorial services will be held at Quarry Church in Alabaster, AL, on May 18, 2025, beginning at 2 pm, and Shiloh Baptist Church in Sontag, MS, on May 24, 2025, beginning at 11 am.

Joe was a kind and blessed gentleman. He was always available, demonstrating what a father ought to be: strong, sure, gentle, reliable.

Janis and Robbie. I am so sorry. We thought so much of Joe. I have fond memories of singing in the choir with him at NHBC.

I only knew Mr. Yates a short time that I cared for him in the hospital. He was the sweetest man with the most genuine smile. I grew to love him and his wife. I know he will be missed. It was truly an honor to get to know him. My prayers and thoughts are with Mrs. Janice during this time.
