Gary Dean Smallwood

Gary Dean Smallwood, 62, of Pelham, Alabama, passed away on July 6, 2026. Born on September 17, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dean lived a life marked by creativity, dedication, and love for his family and passions.
Dean pursued higher education at the University of Auburn, where he cultivated his talent for writing—a skill that would define much of his professional life. Over the years, Dean earned recognition for his exceptional contributions to journalism, including accolades from the prestigious Jesse H. Neal journalism awards. His work reflected not only his mastery of the written word but also his commitment to excellence in his craft.
Beyond his career achievements, Dean was deeply involved in the lives of those he loved. He was a devoted husband to Patricia Bowness Smallwood and a proud father to Lawrence Mathison Smallwood (Lars). Dean cherished every moment spent with his family and found joy in supporting Lars’s endeavors. As a volunteer for Lars’s high school marching band, Dean combined his enthusiasm for music with his dedication to being an active presence in his son’s life.
Dean’s love for music extended beyond volunteering; it was a lifelong passion that enriched his days and inspired those around him. Whether through writing or music, Dean had an innate ability to connect with others and leave a lasting impression.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; his son Lawrence; and his brother Brett Thomas Smallwood. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth (June) Mathison Smallwood.
Dean will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and son whose legacy lives on through the lives he touched. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
