Ethel Moist Perkins

Ethel Moist Perkins,  of Childersburg, Alabama died Saturday morning, June 24, 2017, at St. Martin’s in the Pines in Birmingham. Born and raised in Abbeville, Louisiana to Albert Reynolds Moist and Aline Starr Burwell Moist, she moved on to earn a BA in Music and Religion from Huntingdon College and her Masters and AA Certification from the University of Montevallo, both in Alabama. Married to Fred Daniel Perkins, Jr. for over 50 years, she led a life of service to others, teaching for Talladega County Schools in addition to working and volunteering in her area and church communities. She dedicated her life to education, encouraging others in their endeavors to become the greatest possible version of themselves. Quietly but powerfully active in the civil rights movement, and as a first step into integrated schools, she taught at Phillis Wheatley when it was still K-12. She worked in every one of the Childersburg schools over her tenure. She was a founding member of the Childersburg Education Foundation in 1988, which continues to provide support in education to date. She was survived by her four children, Robert I. Perkins (& Maureen) of Hoover, AL, Marian P. Milliron (& Chuck) of Cataula, GA, J. Laura Perkins of Beaverton, OR and Elizabeth Inez Meyer; 10 grandchildren, Derek Keller, Briana Bramlett, Kara Hutchens, Charles E. Milliron III, Christopher L. Milliron, Ian B. Kodl, Spencer A. Wright, Nicole M. Odum, Russell A. Wright, Katherine A. Meyer and 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents and husband (named above), and sisters, Thelma M. Ramke and Marian M. Morgan. Memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Childersburg on Wednesday, June 28th at 2:00 PM with visitation following. 500 5th Ave. SW, Childersburg, AL 35044.  In Lieu of flowers, please make contributions to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Childersburg or the Childersburg Education Foundation.
