Mary “Kay” Sisco Vernon

Mary “Kay” Sisco Vernon, age 82 was surrounded by family when she went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 19, 2024. She was born to a dairy farming family in the Powderly community of Birmingham, AL on October 21, 1942. The family moved from Powderly to Brierfield, AL in 1954 to relocate and enlarge the dairy operation. She graduated from Montevallo High School in 1961.

Kay enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family. During her lifetime, Kay was a homemaker, loving mother and worked as a part-time secretary at Northside Baptist Church in Calera. She worked as a floral assistant at Rockco’s Florist in Montevallo and served as a part-time postmaster at the Wilton Post Office. She also worked in various capacities at the University of Montevallo, Hoover High School and Spain Park High School. She played a significant role in caring for her only grandchild, Ashley during her younger years. Kay was a member of Wilton Baptist Church for many years then moved her membership to Calera Baptist Church in 2001 to attend church with her family.

Kay is survived by her daughters, Scarlett Harrison and Benetta Harrison Lemley (Sean); granddaughter, Ashley Kaylanne Lemley; sister, Edna Mae Meeks.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents, William Kelly Sisco and Mary Fannie Hereford Sisco; husband, Billy Byrd Vernon; sister, Irene Howell; twin brother, Ray Sisco and her beloved teacup chihuahua Butterscotch.

A Visitation will be held at Charter Funeral Home Chapel on December 22, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Community Baptist Church Cemetery in Brierfield, Alabama. Charter Funeral Home in Calera is handling the arrangements for the family.
